Chronic pain affects a huge number of people across the UK. For many individuals, pain is not just a physical sensation. It can affect sleep, mood, concentration and the ability to enjoy everyday life. Over time, people living with long term discomfort may begin to limit activities, withdraw socially or feel frustrated by the constant effort of managing symptoms.

Modern neuroscience is helping us understand pain in a new way. While injuries and physical conditions can trigger pain signals, the brain ultimately decides how strongly those signals are experienced. Factors such as expectation, fear, stress and emotional state can all influence how pain is processed.

Because of this, therapies that work with the brain and nervous system are gaining increasing attention in the field of pain management.

One technique that has sparked growing interest is hypnoesitherapy.

What is hypnoesitherapy?

Hypnoesitherapy is a hypnosis based approach designed to support the modulation of chronic pain. The technique is inspired by the work of Spanish physician Ángel Escudero, who explored how suggestion, expectation and physiological responses could influence the experience of discomfort.

The approach combines elements of clinical hypnosis with modern neuroscience. It focuses on helping the brain reinterpret sensory signals and activate natural pain regulating mechanisms within the nervous system.

Why brain based pain approaches matter

In the UK, nearly one in two adults lives with some form of chronic pain, meaning pain that lasts longer than three months. That represents almost 28 million people experiencing ongoing discomfort.

Despite this, there are only a limited number of specialist NHS pain clinics available. While these clinics offer valuable multidisciplinary care, the scale of demand highlights the need for broader understanding of pain management approaches.

As research continues to explore the relationship between the brain, the nervous system and pain perception, therapies that combine neuroscience and psychological techniques are becoming an important area of interest.

Learning about hypnoesitherapy

The Solution Focused Training Academy (SFTA) is hosting a CPD training event introducing the Hypnoesitherapy Rapid Trance Protocol for chronic pain.

This short online training explores how hypnosis and neuroscience informed approaches may support the modulation of chronic discomfort and improve understanding of how the brain processes pain signals.
